10 Then/Now Photos of High School Sweethearts to Warm Your Soul

Only in the movies and in books do you expect high school sweethearts to fall in love, stay in love and end up together. Here are 10 amazing stories people shared with us.

1. Bethany Pryce + Nick O’Leary

“Nick and I met as freshman in high school. As the cliché goes: he played football and basketball, and I was a cheerleader. But we were only best friends throughout high school – we didn’t actually start dating until our freshman year of college. Now we’re engaged and our wedding is next year, just two days shy of our 10-year anniversary.”

2. Megan Belknap + Jarrod Hampshire

“We met in 1995 when we were in the 5th grade. We sat next to each other in class, and I couldn’t stand him. He would pick on me and throw spit balls at me every day. I thought it was because he didn’t like me, but I later learned that, when you’re in middle school, it means the exact opposite. We went to every high school dance together and were even voted ‘most likely to get married’ by our classmates for senior superlatives. When college rolled around we started out at different universities, but I ended up transferring to his university so I could be closer to him. We dated for 10 years before getting married, and last fall, after 6 years of marriage, we welcomed our first baby girl. We love the fact that she will be able to look back at pictures of us growing up and see all our history together. I even saved every note he ever wrote me (before text messages were a thing!)”

3. Kelsey + Dustin Herr

“We met in 4th grade. He was the popular boy, and I was the awkward new kid in class. In 9th grade, his presence hit me like a freight train and I couldn’t get enough. He was popular, attractive, and (to my disbelief) paying attention to me! Over the next 2 years, we stayed up every night talking on AIM. At junior prom, after showing up with his friends in Zoot suits, he asked me to dance! We’ve been together ever since. He proposed a year after graduation, and three years after that, we got married – and we wore our junior prom outfits for the last dance at our wedding reception!”

4. Madeline Bruce + Scott Boynton

“5 years ago Scott Boynton laid a big ‘ole kiss on me and asked me if I would be his girlfriend. A few days later, we went to the senior prom together and were crowned prom king and queen. We were graduating high school soon after, so many people figured we were ‘just a fling.’ But 5 years later, this fling is still a thing – and I’m still dancing my way through life with my prom king.”

5. Brittney Hodges Meinrenken + Mark Meinrenken

“Mark and I met my junior year of high school. I didn’t have a date to the prom yet, so one of my best friends introduced me to a guy from a different school who she had worked with over the summer. I had never had a boyfriend and was very shy. The night we met, we went on a big group date to the movies. I barely said a word to him. But luckily he thought my shyness towards him was cute, and wanted to keep seeing me. We spent some more time hanging out in groups, and I knew I had to ask him to be my prom date, but that made me so nervous. Little did I know, he had been talking to my friends and asking them if they thought I’d say yes to being his girlfriend! They definitely kept a good secret, because when I asked him to prom he surprised me by asking me to be his girlfriend right after. Fast forward almost 8 years later, we are now married and have a 3 year old son named Levi!”

6.  Kayla + Jerad Moffitt

“‘I like you. Circle yes or no if you like me too.’ Writing that note and giving it to my friend to hand to Jerad Moffitt in the 7th grade, was one of the bravest things I’ve ever done. A few days later Jerad and I became “boyfriend/girlfriend.” We dated for several years until his family moved from Arkansas to New Orleans. The day he left, we shared our first kiss. That was in 2007. Eventually we broke up – the distance was really hard for a couple of teenagers. I cried for months. We often talked, but we still went on to date other people. Two years passed, then one day I messaged him on MySpace asking if he would see me. My grandma, who had believed we were soulmates since the first day we met, bought Jerad a $700 plane ticket for him to come visit me for the weekend. I was a senior in high school and he was a sophomore in college at the time. By the end of that weekend, we said ‘I love you’ to each other. We got married 2 years later.”

7. Jade + Chris Houtz

“We met when we were 12 years old at our hometown’s summer festival. We didn’t talk much because we were both still so shy and awkward. In high school we hung out with the same group of friends, and even went to our junior prom together. However, it wasn’t until the summer after our freshman year of college that we really started spending a lot of time together one-on-one – even though we denied that there was anything going on for the longest time. I think we were trying to make sense of the evolution of our friendship into a relationship. Though we went to different colleges, we’d often visit each other and spend our winter and summer breaks together. At one point, we even lived on opposite coasts, but were still able to maintain ‘us’.  It always seemed like no matter where life took us, we always found our way back to each other. Finally, after years of living away from each other, we took the plunge and moved to the same city. Shortly after, we got engaged and became husband and wife. Grounded in a foundation of friendship – we’ve now been together for 15 years (dating for 10 years and married for 5). We’re living our happily ever after”

8. Rebecca + Dennis Miller

“My husband was born on April 10, and I was born on April 11th – in the same hospital! However, we didn’t officially meet until 4th grade at church. Later, we went to the same middle school, and I had a big crush on him. He would always ask me to dance at every school dance, but I kept turning him down because I was afraid my dad would be mad if I danced with a boy. Finally, at our last dance of the year, I danced with him. I was so excited to go to the same high school in the fall, but he switched schools last minute. We lost touch after that. Fast forward to college, I had a class with a guy who had his same first and last name, but was disappointed when I found out it wasn’t him. However, it peaked my interest about how he was doing and I went and searched for him on Facebook. When I couldn’t find him, I decided to look up his family in the phone book, and randomly called him!  We had a very short and awkward conversation, as I should have expected. But after that, we started messaging each other everyday on AIM, which was the easiest way to talk because he was at a college 8 hours away from me. Then on Christmas break, he surprised me and showed up to a gig I had at a coffee house. That was in 2008. We went on a date shortly after and have been together ever since. We were married in 2014 and are expecting our first child this upcoming April.”

9. Ariel Belli + Dennis Lipschultz

“I met Dennis the summer before junior year of high school. I hated him. He was sarcastic, never serious with his answers, and he drove me insane. Yet when I saw him at homecoming with another girl, I couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. A few weeks after the dance, I ended up going on a double date with Dennis and another couple, and the night finished with us sharing our first kiss. Soon after, he asked me to be his girlfriend – and I was ecstatic. When our senior prom rolled around the following year, I was happy to be his date this time. After 10 years of dating, we bought our first home together and were married in the fall of 2014. He still gives me smart-ass remarks but I love his sense of humor and know we’ll always be laughing through life together.”

10. Kylie + Jake Hansen

“I was 14 when I sent all my schoolgirl friends to find Jake on the soccer field and ask him to go to our 8th grade graduation dance with me. He said yes! We both had a crush on each other, but we were young and nothing ever came of it. We stayed friends throughout all of high school and ended up going to our senior prom together. After we graduated, he joined the military, and I moved away for college. In 2014, while Jake was deployed, he reached out to me and asked if we could catch up over Skype. I was a little taken back, but agreed.  After our first successful video chat, we kept having these Skype dates more and more frequently and really began to fall for each other. Finally, we decided we wanted to see each other in person.  Jake was deployed in Korea at the time, but he made a trip all the way to Idaho to see me: I got home from work one day, and there he was, standing in my driveway. That’s when I knew he was the one. The next morning we woke up and went on our first official, in-person date – and we’ve been together ever since. We’re coming up on our 2 year wedding anniversary. Jake is still in the military, but we make it work. He is the man of my dreams. “
