“About 8 years ago, my sister and I took a trip to The Bahamas and I convinced her to try couchsurfing with me (this was before Airbnb existed). Couchsurfing is a website for travelers who don’t want to stay at hotels and prefer a more local experience over a touristy vibe. It was this spontaneous decision that ultimately led me to meeting Hank, my Bahamian fiancé. Our couchsurfing host was super accommodating and showed us around Nassau. He even took us to a block party one night, which is where I met Hank’s Uncle, Coco. Upon striking up a conversation with Coco, my sister and I shared with him how we were kind of just winging our trip. Turns out, Coco owns and rents out cottages in Eleuthera (another island in the Bahamas) and invited us to stay at one - to which we gladly accepted. Upon arriving in Eleuthera, Coco sent his nephew, Hank, to pick us up from the airport and drive us to our cottage for the weekend. When I walked outside of the airport doors and laid my eyes on Hank, I was lost for words. He was so handsome, had the most amazing smile, and when he spoke to me in his raspy voice, I was done for. For the next 2 days, my adventure in Eleuthera was also the beginning of Hank and I’s love story. We drove around the entire island belting out John Legend, eating native food, laughing to the point of tears, and just living in the moment. It was straight out of a movie. On the morning of my returning flight, Hank and I said our tearful goodbyes. We parted ways with beautiful memories of each other, but I truly thought that would be the end of it. A few months later, I was back in Atlanta (my hometown), when I received a text message from an unknown number asking to meet up for a drink. It was Hank. We met up that evening, and the rest is history. We did long distance for 4 years until eventually, I took the plunge and moved to the Bahamas to be with the man of my dreams.”
